Don't Forget To Maintain Your Assets (Without the production capability, there is no production. ) by KhaazRa MaaRanu, yet inspired by Steven R. Covey, author of "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" Do you want more out of life? Want more meaning? Please, continue reading. Aesop is known as one of the wisest men to ever walk the earth. His fable of the goose and the golden egg, which outlines the principle of effectiveness will have a profound impact on your health. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The story is of a poor farmer who discovered one day in the nest of his pet goose a glittering golden egg. Initially, he thinks it must be some kind of trick, yet as he starts to throw the egg to the side, he rethinks it and takes it in to be assessed for its value. What do you know. The egg turns out to be pure gold! The farmer can't believe his good fortune and becomes even more surprised the next day when this experience is repeated. Day after day, he wakes up to rush to the nest and find another golden egg. He becomes extremely wealthy and it all seems too good to be true. The farmer becomes increasingly wealthy and with this, comes greed and impatience. He is not patient enough to wait day after day for the golden eggs, so the farmer decides that he will kill the goose and get them all at once. Surprisingly, when he opens the goose, it is empty. There are no golden eggs in it and now there is no way to get any more. Essentially, the farmer has destroyed the goose that produced them. Many people today see effectiveness from the golden egg view. The more you produce, the more you do, the more effective you are. Aesop's fable tells us two things. True effectiveness is a function of two things: what is produced (the golden eggs) and the producing asset or capacity to produce (the goose). If like many today, you adopt the pattern of life that focuses on golden eggs and neglects the goose, you will very soon be without the asset that produces golden eggs. If you only take care of the goose with no intention toward the golden eggs, sure enough, you won't have the resources to feed yourself or the goose. We should take note here of a concept created by Stephen R. Covey, called the P/PC Balance. P stands for production of desired results, the golden eggs. PC stands for production capability, the ability or asset that produces the golden eggs. Now let us bring it home even further by sharing a personal experience with you that we are all guilty of. I owned a Toyota, Camry. It was very nice and as you know, the Toyota Camry is still one of the best cars for mileage, durability and long term "stamina". I used it like a charm for about 2-3 years without any problems whatsoever. I did not even maintain it outside of oil changes and only then, every six months. It was a very reliable car, so I had not even thought of having to own another car anytime soon. One day, the car began to move in spurts. I discovered that the car had dirt in the gas line and needed to be cleaned. Then I was told that the catalytic converter went bad and that the gasket had to be changed. By the time the mechanic gave me the receipt for the expensive bill and then told me there were a few other repairs needed on the car. I realized that an entirely new engine was needed and it could have easily been avoided with proper maintenance and ignoring "the quick result short term cheap way out" thinking in me. If I had invested in Production Capacity, in preserving and maintaining the asset, which is the car. I would still be enjoying its Production, getting me where I need to go without expensive monthly car payments. In your search for short-term returns or results, you often ruin a precious physical asset such as a car, a computer, a washer or dryer, your environment and even your body. For your assets to function at peak levels in the future, to have agility, flexibility, energy, a great sex drive, beautiful and pleasant looking skin, a great body and a Master Mind, will require a paradigm shift on your part from short-term quick results to long-term planning with daily maintenance.
