Dear Friend,
Are you healthy, happy and wealthy?
Can you tell me why you wake up every day?
If you have answered "no" to any of these questions, then I have something for you that will change your life.
With your answer in mind, please understand that you also influence your family and friends with your opinions and perceptions, no matter how productive or destructive they may be. And with this in mind, very little hurts worse than to see your countless friends and family members fall by the wayside.
Some are no longer here to read this letter, some are behind bars because of simple mistakes made as a very young man or woman. Some
are in mental prison, not able to free their physical body because their mental body has never received the nurturing, education and development needed.
Almost 99% of these failures, disappointments and wasted energy is due to misdirected energy and the decision not to be proactive. How many times have you told yourself, "if only I had invested a little earlier, if I had prepared for this opportunity, if I knew that when...", yet after the fact.
Interestingly enough, it reminds me of coach Ray in Tampa, Florida, whom works with lots of children in the inner-city, ages 11-14. Whenever Ray voluntarily coaches a basketball team, which he takes very serious because he works really hard with the children, an interesting thing happens.
He enjoys making them mentally and physically stronger. Even though he does not make one penny, he literally thrives off of the children's progress and I am sure you would as well. Everyone loves to see children excel.
He does not just show up as a volunteer coach, he works very hard and all the high energy drills that he requires his team players to do, he does as well and more. This sets an example to the children that it can be done. Coach Ray is a great role model of hard work and ethics. Just watching him is intense.
The parents, both male and female absolutely love it! The parents especially love to see their children motivated, excel and give it their best, which 99% of the time, has resulted in wins and reinforced will power. The inner-city children have become so good that the parents of the competing teams in the suburbs are literally complaining and asking "why are all the black children on the same team?". How about that he says! Then, he just smiles.
Ray says that these suburban parents don't understand his team's work ethic and what they do during practices to prepare. He says that, "no one is born a good basketball player". What the suburban parents don't know is that in many cases, basketball for inner-city children is a thing to do because this is what a lot of children are exposed to.
If you think about it, there is a basketball court in every neighborhood, almost every few blocks. So, there is ample preparation and the more you do of a particular thing, the better you will become at it. Hence, the NBA being dominated by Afrikan-Americans.
Coaching is time consuming and does take away from coach Ray's business life, yet it is very fulfilling and rewarding. To see children push themselves to do things that they are normally uncomfortable doing because of a lack of exposure, self-confidence, lack of preparation and a lack of training and development is a great feeling that money just can't buy.
What's baffling is the amount of parents willing to sort of ride by
and drop their children off. With all the money being spent on entertainment for Afrikan-Americans, according to a report from The Urban League, money is not always a problem, yet the amount of money being spent on reading is decreasing.
You and I know that it is our values that determine how we spend money and no one has the right to tell you how to spend it. It is your values that will dictate this and your values are shaped by the education and investment in your self-improvement up to this point in your life.
Think about this. What is the outcome or ratio for the average person purchasing ten to thirty movies per year that amount to over $160 or purchasing a unique self-improvement program that will give them and their children lifetime value? There is a saying that goes like this, "where a man's treasure is, is where his heart is".
Ask yourself a question. Name 5-10 movie titles that you saw in the last year and name 5-10 self-improvement courses that you completed last year?
The constant inability to be pro-active is literally destroying the inner-city communities and your future generations.
Coach Ray says that what happens to often in the inner-city is,'....if the price is extremely low or it is FREE, a lot of the parents are gung-ho and all for it. During basketball's off-season, the same children are simply dropped off at the gym and 99% of the time, the children just run around the facility like gremlin monsters on a sugar rush. NO DIRECTION WHATSOEVER and no supervision. And parents are alright with this because they don't have to pay or it is cheap and the children are sort of pre-occupied.'
This is a very simple matter that we often overlook. Ask yourself "what would happen if you did not give quality attention and nurturing to your life partner, husband or wife? How long do you think it would last and what type of results would you receive?".
Most people don't like to hear this, yet it is the truth and sometimes is not comfortable. You and I must face this issue and resolve it in order to progressively move forward. You see, it is cute when your child is small, under the age of 11 and 12, yet the older they become, the more they are confronted with real life issues and the more attention, direction and sound principles they need in order to be successful. And we have not even addressed the issues of your children avoiding some of the pitfalls of society. It is your choice to be proactive or reactive!
Well, who knows what the future holds for the children that have not been given direction nor prepared for life's many challenges. They will soon be adults. Without implementing proactive measures, giving practical suggestions and instead just venting and blaming someone else about what has been done to or against you, your future is up for grabs. If you choose to do nothing, the only thing that you can can do is "keep hope alive!". And here the self-inflicted cycle continues.
One of the reasons inner-city children excel at sports is because a large majority of time is spent in this arena as there is no other pre-occupation or direction, yet do you know what the percentage is for a person to make it to the NBA?
Try somewhere around 1%. Even the late hip-hop artist Biggie Smalls thought that he had to have a wicked jump shot or sell crack rock to get out of the ghetto. Some of you detest rap, hip-hop and rightfully so in many cases, yet children did not give birth to themselves nor do they create the environment. If a child does not display productive and respectful behavior, we must ask the parent what happened. If you are not productive as an adult, then we must ask you what are you doing about it?
When you and I were children and like many of the children today, more times than not actively engage in non-supervised sports and activities as the favorite past-time.
These children and some of you whom are adults today have been fortunate enough to reach the point where you are able to create your own family, still carry the vestiges of your upbringing into adulthood. You follow some of your parents' habits of not investing in your self-improvement, which results in a vicious cycle of struggle and disappointment played out in divorces, low paying jobs, incarceration, bad choices for a life partner and so much more that could be avoided.
Ask yourself, are you where you want to be? How much time or money do you invest in your self-improvement? Will you depend on the educational system to teach your children the laws of success? How will you teach your children how to be successful if you don't know? Will you simply rely on the "system" to educate, take care of you and your family and then protest and blame the system if it does not work out? Or, will you be proactive and learn what you have not been exposed to from one of the masters of our time?
